Many thanks to NetGalley, Sourcebooks Landmark, and Tantor Audio for gifting me a digital and audio ARC of the fiction debut by Susie Dent, with the audiobook narrated by Louise Brealey, with an interview with Susie Dent and Jack Edwards. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!
Martha has returned to Oxford after a decade abroad and is working as a senior editor at the Clarendon English Dictionary. Postcards start arriving anonymously in a coded format, but apparently linking to Martha's older sister, Charlie, who has been missing for years. Martha and her team begin investigating the clues, but it appears that someone wants these secrets to remain that way, so the team must crack the code before it's too late.
Susie Dent is an etymologist and UK TV show word expert, so she was the perfect person to write this story about words, their history and impact, and the puzzles within. I think all readers will appreciate the discussion of words and books, as well as how words make their way into dictionaries. The mystery itself was so interesting, all wound up in Martha's feelings about her missing sister. Great characters and writing; it was all very clever and the audiobook narration was wonderful. A great debut and apparently the first in a new series, so I'm excited for what comes next!
