9.22.2025 - One of Us

One of Us by Dan Chaon

Many thanks to NetGalley, Henry Holt & Co, and Macmillan Audio for gifting me a digital and audio ARC of the latest novel by Dan Chaon, with the audiobook perfectly narrated by the cast of John Pirhalla, Stephanie NĂ©meth-Parker, with notes read by the author.   All opinions expressed in this review are my own – 4 stars!

Bolt and Eleanor are twins so close that they can literally read each other’s minds.  But when their mother dies, they are forced to leave home under the care of a vicious con man who claims to be their Uncle Charlie.  They are able to escape and soon find themselves part of a traveling circus.  Bolt revels in his newfound family, but Eleanor pulls away.  But when Uncle Charlie picks up their trail, they are once again in danger.

I’ve enjoyed Chaon’s last two books (Ill Will and Sleepwalk) and this one follows with his characteristic dark humor, intriguing characters with heart, and just that extra creep factor.  I started with the digital copy but once I started the audiobook, I continued on, because the creepiness amped up with Pirhalla and Nemeth-Parker’s narration (I still shiver thinking about the uncle’s voice!).  This book delves deep into the traveling circus era, with a found family for those who don’t fit in “normal” society.  Told from multiple POV, this book is richly atmospheric and will transport you back in time and place.
