Many thanks to NetGalley, Tor Publishing Group, and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest in the Sworn Soldier series by T. Kingfisher, with the audiobook wonderfully narrated by Avi Roque. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!
Alex Easton does not want to visit America, and especially not to visit an abandoned mind in West Virginia with a reputation for being haunted. But when their old friend Dr. Denton summons them to help find his lost cousin, Oscar, who went missing in that very mine and, well, sometimes a sworn soldier has to do what a sworn soldier has to do..
What a fun, creepy series this is and this one especially seemed to hit home with me. We see Alex so out of their element by visiting America, and is uncomfortable with the culture and language, let alone having to go into a dark, creepy mine. The best part of these books is the wonderful writing of T. Kingfisher, whose words are so descriptive that you can feel the cold and damp of the mine, the squishy sounds coming from the floor, and the fear of going down into the unknown. Another great chapter in this series and it seems that there will be more to come - sign me up, please! As with all these books, the narration just made it better!
