Many thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for gifting me a digital ARC of this wonderful novel by Ron Rindo. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!
Gabriel Fisher was born an orphan, weighing eighteen pounds and measuring twenty-seven inches long. No one in Lakota, Wisconsin, knows what to make of him. He continues to grow and possesses extraordinary athletic talent. Gabriel is raised by his older brother and then by his devout Amish grandparents, who disapprove of the attention paid him and keep him as isolated as possible from the English world. But it's hard to hide when you're almost 8 feet tall.
This story gutted me in so many ways and I absolutely loved the experience. Gabriel is a wonderful character but the book is told from the POV of all the important people in his life, from the veterinarian who takes him under his wing, to the local bartender, to his coach and his grandmother. Such a unique way to tell his story, because community and family are so important to who we are, and showcases the impact each of us makes on others. I loved the Amish perspective as well, giving this story such importance to faith and everyday miracles. The characters are all wonderfully human and flawed, and I will be thinking about this book for a long time to come. Very highly recommended - a must read!!
