Many thanks to NetGalley and Riverhead Books for gifting me a digital ARC of this wonderful book by Laura Moriarty, this month's Read With Jenna Book Club pick. All opinions expressed in this book are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!
It's 1949 in Florida, when 17-year-old Nora meets Leonard, shy and brilliant, at school. One incident causes his parents to force Nora to not see Leonard, setting off a chain of secrets and lies that will follow them into adulthood.
What a beautifully written story set in a time period where women really had so few options on so many fronts. It was both heartbreaking and beautiful to watch the power of first love between Nora and Leonard, as well as follow them through the years. It's a story of loss, class differences, and how decisions cause ripple effects throughout our lives, but it's also a story of long-lasting love, forgiveness, and second chances. The characters felt so real, their journey so emotional, that I didn't want this book to end. Highly recommended!
