Many thanks to NetGalley, Recorded Books Media and Sourcebooks Landmark for gifting me an audio ARC of this wonderful novel by Meagan Church, narrated superbly by Susan Bennett. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!
Lulu Mayfield is doing her best to be the perfect 1950s housewife. Her gelatin salads are the talk of the neighborhood, she keeps her husband and child happy, and the household running smoothly. But after the birth of her second child, things start to unravel. A new neighbor, Bitsy, moves in and Lulu becomes fixated with her.
I'm trying to say as little as possible so that you get the full effect of this amazing story when you read it - and you must read it, although the author does give trigger warnings at the beginning of the book. This book is so nostalgic - while I was born right after the 1950s, so much was familiar. Remember S&H Green Stamps? Those gelatin salads? I laughed out loud at that dishwasher although we certainly didn't have one growing up. All that doesn't even begin to talk about the expectations on women during that time. While this book is mostly a character driven domestic drama, there's a twist that had me gasping, and pushed it over into a psychological suspense novel. The audiobook narration was perfect and I was drawn in right from the start. Very highly recommended - loved it!
