8.31.2025 - Shadow Play

Shadow Play by Sara Driscoll

Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest thriller by Sara Driscoll.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!

Chicago physical therapist Krista is recovering from her own personal trauma, but along with helping her clients recover physically, she and her best friend, Hailey, have started an online advice show, streaming on the Twitch platform.  Called A Word from the Wise, the friends take questions and offer real-world advice, and the chat becomes very popular.  But not all that popularity is good, because a troll named Chase547 becomes unhappy with the advice he's given about his pursuit of a woman.  He soon throws the chats into chaos.  Then chaos becomes reality.

Although I've never heard of Twitch, this book was great about combining real world platforms and jobs into a story that felt so incredibly real it gave me shivers.  You could feel the tension ratchet up as the troll keeps gaining more and more power to disrupt, not only on the chat but in their lives.  This story will make you think twice about how easy it is for someone to gain real world information from an online presence.  I enjoyed the police procedural aspect as well, as the case ramped up and the stalking increased.  A great thriller!
