5.31.2025 - What Every Mother Needs

What Every Mother Needs by Emily Shiner

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest psychological thriller by Emily Shiner and including me on the book tour!  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Charlotte is alone with baby Jordan after her husband, Lawrence, died.  She's struggling on her own, so when Sophie shows up at her door saying she's Lawrence's sister and there to help, Charlotte is so grateful.  But then Charlotte finds Sophie going through her things and is worried about what she will find.  She wants her out of the house.  But Sophie is not going to go easily without getting what she came for..

Told from the POV of both Charlotte and Sophie, this book will have your head spinning, wondering which unreliable narrator you can trust!  We also hear from a third narrator, Her, giving us background information about Lawrence.  And Lawrence's behavior will definitely have you thinking that it's a good thing he's dead.  You may think you'll know what's going to happen in this one, but you'll be surprised at all the twists and turns.  As always, Emily Shiner has written a gripping, tense thriller!

5.30.2025 - Mansion Beach

Mansion Beach by Meg Mitchell Moore

Many thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for gifting me a digital ARC of the new book by Meg Mitchell Moore.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

It's summer on Block Island, Rhode Island, and things are heating up.  Nicola is looking for a fresh start and some rest at her cousin David's cottage, but the parties happening next door pull her in.  That home belongs to Juliana, an entrepreneur with a mysterious past who is preparing for a major IPO.  But she's also hoping to rekindle a flame with a many who has connections to Nicola.  Taylor is David's wife; she has everything she planned for and won't let anyone take it away.  Then there's a dead body.

This is being touted as a take on The Great Gatsby, but although I'm sure I read that in high school, I don't remember enough of it to speak on that.  I had a bit of trouble figuring out the time switches as we learned about the characters’ pasts, but as soon as I got started in the chapter, it was easy to figure out.  This is a good book to escape into, a character study of classism, and how our secrets threaten us and hold us back.  None of the characters are extremely likable, but it's filled with scandals and messiness - just what you want for a summer beach read!

5.29.2025 - A Dead Draw

A Dead Draw by Robert Dugoni

Many thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing | Thomas & Mercer for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest in the Tracy Crosswhite series by one of my favorite authors, Robert Dugoni.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

Detective Tracy Crosswhite doesn't typically lose her cool.  But when an interrogation of a suspect in two cold cases, Erik Schmidt, shows that he has ties to the person who murdered Tracy's sister, memories start overwhelming her.  When she makes a critical mistake during a shooting exercise, she is forced to take some time off.  She heads to her hometown weekend house to regroup with her husband, daughter and their nanny.  But a legal glitch has set Schmidt free and he's on Tracy's tail.

I would read Robert Dugoni's shopping list if available - he can write any genre and I love all his books.  But this series has a special place in my heart - it's like connecting with old friends and memory slots me right back into the story and characters.  As always, this book is a tense, gripping, cat-and-mouse police procedural and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.  We are also introduced to a new character, Lydia, and I hope we hear more of her in future books.  As always with Dugoni's books, this is highly recommended.

5.28.2025 - Whispers of Dead Girls

Whispers of Dead Girls by Marlee Bush

Many thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for gifting me a digital ARC of this atmospheric thriller by Marlee Bush.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Ren Taylor is a new teacher at her old high school.  Ren is still haunted by the death of her teenage sister and the resulting scandal.  Ren meets physics teacher Bryson Lewis and is enchanted along with the rest of the staff, until she starts getting suspicious of him and a close relationship he has with a student.  Is history about to repeat itself?

This is a dark, twisty thriller that will have you questioning everyone.  Even Ren's murdered sister is a character, as Ren sees her everywhere and can't let the past lie.  The premise is frightening and familiar, with young women vulnerable and men potentially dangerous.  There's a strong need for justice and revenge over anything else.  It's a bit of a slow burn as the characters develop, but hold on because the twists are coming!

5.28.2025 - It's a Love Story

It's a Love Story by Annabel Monaghan

Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest novel by Annabel Monaghan.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

Jane Jackson was a former teen TV character, but the experience left her scarred and feeling not worthy of love.  Twenty years later, she's desperate to get a movie made that she truly believes in, and just maybe someone from her old cast can help her.  But to make that happen, she has to turn to Dan Finnegan, the last person she wants to owe, for help.

Because this book was written by Annabel Monaghan, you already know you're going to love it, and you will really love it!  Jane has let her past color all her future hopes of love as well as a good relationship with her mom.  Seeing Dan's big, loud family just amplifies what she doesn't have or feel worthy of.  You'll be rooting for and loving all of these characters, including the secondary ones (Dan's dad - swoon!).  Full of emotion as well as life lessons that had me alternately laughing out loud and in tears.  Be sure and add this one to your summer reading list.

5.27.2025 - So Happy Together

So Happy Together by Olivia Worley

Many thanks to NetGalley, St Martin's Press | Minotaur Books and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of this wild thriller by Olivia Worley, with the audiobook narrated by Michelle H. Lee.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Jane has only had 6 dates with Colin, but that's enough to know that he's the one.  So when he dumps her and starts dating Zoe, Jane is sure she can convince him that they belong together, even though Jane actually begins to like Zoe.  But when Jane breaks into Colin's apartment, she discovers something that will change all their lives.

Welcome to crazy town - the good kind of crazy - when nothing is as it seems, which is what makes this story fun.  So suspend real life and delve into this one as blind as possible, because the twists and turns keep coming.  A story of NYC ambition, obsession, with unreliable narrators.  The audiobook narration was great - plus that cover!

5.27.2025 - The Martha Vineyard's Beach and Book Club

The Martha's Vineyard Beach and Book Club by Martha Hall Kelly

Many thanks to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group | Ballantine Books | Megan Beatie Books for gifting me a physical and digital ARC of the latest historical fiction novel by a favorite, Martha Hall Kelly.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

In 1942, the Smith girls - aspiring writer Cadence and younger sister Briar - are trying to keep their family farm together during WWII as the US Army arrives on Martha's Vineyard.  Their older brother, Tom, has gone off to war and their grandmother is in failing health.  To keep things normal, Cadence and her best friend, Bess, start a book club that catches the attention of a NY publisher.  But when a man washes ashore, their lives become filled with danger.

Martha Hall Kelly has done it again - made a gripping novel about true events that happened on Martha's Vineyard.  Along with glimpses of the mystery continuing into 2016, we learn of the events during the war that shaped a family and an island.  While there are hints at romance and mystery, this book centers on the strong women who do what they think is right, especially when that involves making hard choices.  I like how the story played out, with characters in 2016 shining light onto what happened in the past and how it will affect the future.  It's also a story of the power of books.  Be sure and read the fascinating author's note at the end to see how much of this story is based in reality.  Love the beautiful cover too - highly recommended!

5.26.2025 - The Other Side of Now

The Other Side of Now by Paige Harbison

Many thanks to NetGalley, St Martin's Press and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of this wonderful book, written and narrated by Paige Harbison.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

Meg Bryan has everything she has ever wanted - a leading role on a hit TV show, a relationship with a movie star, and plenty of money.  But she feels as fake as her stage name, Lana Lord.  After a breakdown at her 30th birthday party, she books a trip to a quaint Ireland village where she and her best friend Aimee always dreamed about living, a dream that dissolved when an accident claimed Aimee's life.  When Meg arrives, everyone treats her as a friend.  And when she looks in the mirror, she no longer sees the Hollywood version of herself but her real self.  Just what is happening?

I thought this book was absolutely charming and the author's narration (something I usually don't like) was spot on, including all the Irish accents.  This book had me feeling so much for the characters and I didn't want the story to end.  The descriptions of Avalon, the Irish village, felt so homey and comfy that I just wanted to stay in those moments.  While there was magical realism involved, nothing ever felt hokey or contrived; it was just a glimpse into another life.  It was also a good commentary on the ideals that women in Hollywood must attain, and it was so refreshing to see the other side of that.  This is a wonderful book about friendship, loss, grabbing onto that brass ring of life.  Highly recommended!

5.26.2025 - By the Time You Read This

By the Time You Read This by Brianna Labuskes

Many thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing | Thomas & Mercer for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest in the Raisa Susanto series by Brianna Labuskes.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

FBI forensic linguist Raisa Susanto thinks she’s through with the past now that her psychopathic serial killer sister, Isabel, is locked away forever. Then Raisa receives a letter from Isabel. It’s just a single message: By the time you read this, I’ll be dead.  Then Isabel is found dead in her cell.  Soon, Raisa and FBI forensic psychologist Callum Kilkenny are back investigating who killed her and why, as well as finding her possible protege before someone else dies.

I have been a huge fan of this series.  While you could read this one as a stand-alone, don't - go back and enjoy the series because it's worth it. The story is wrapped up nicely with this book, but hope springs eternal that we haven't heard the last of Raisa and Callum!  Do pay close attention to the time periods stated before each chapter to alleviate confusion - but it’s such a great way to tell this story.  It's a fascinating look at forensic linguistics - something I had never heard about until this series.  Plus, there's the whole topic of nature vs nurture among the three sisters.  This is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you intrigued and guessing until the end.

5.25.2025 - Burned Bridges

Burned Bridges by John Gilstrap

Many thanks to NetGalley, Kensington Publishing, and Recorded Books Media for gifting me an audio ARC of this first in a new series by John Gilstrap, perfectly narrated by Natalia Payne.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!

Former FBI Director Irene Rivers was anxious to get away from DC politics and settle into a quiet life in a small town in West Viriginia with her kids.  But when a dead body is found on her property, evidence points to murder and a cover up.  Soon the family is the target of threats and intimidation.

This was a new-to-me author, but I was looking for an audiobook and this was available to listen before its release date.  And I'm so glad that I picked it, because I was soon completely immersed in this gritty, West Virginia small town story.  It's action packed and thrilling, and it's going to make a great series.  Irene was such a strong woman main character, but the secondary characters, including her kids, were fleshed out and realistic.  Sign me up for the next in this series - I can't wait!

5.24.2025 - Murder in the Dollhouse

Murder in the Dollhouse by Rich Cohen

Many thanks to NetGalley, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of this true crime story by Rich Cohen, with the audiobook perfectly narrated by Edoardo Ballerini.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Everyone is probably at least vaguely familiar with the Jennifer Dulos story - it's been well publicized.  A wealthy suburban mother drops off her kids at school and has never been seen again.  In the midst of an ugly divorce from her husband, this is a gripping story that became national news.

This book covered the backstory of Jennifer, including the author's connection to her circle, as well as her marriage and murder, and the court case.  It's a story we're all familiar with, not only with Jennifer, but with countless women.  The fact that Jennifer was wealthy and beautiful, living what seemed to be a dream life, certainly thrust it into the headlines, but it's a case as old as time.  What struck me is that for all the protections her family sought to give her when she was young, they did nothing to prepare her for a real life monster she would invite into her world.  My heart goes out to her children.  Good read/listen for true crime fans.

5.24.2025 - Aftertaste

Aftertaste by Daria Lavelle

Many thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for gifting me a digital ARC of this debut novel by Daria Lavelle.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Konstantin is still haunted by his father's death when he was ten, made worse by the fact that they argued the last time they were together.  Food was always important to Kostya and his dad, and since his death, Kostya can taste the favorite foods, down to the specific ingredients, of those who have died.   One night, he acts on what he's tasting and everything changes.

Wow - this book is so intriguing and covers so many different genres, from speculative fiction, to horror, to romance, to the paranormal - and of course, food and drink.  At its core, though, it is a book about grief and longing, and how food is wrapped up in all that.  Who doesn't taste or smell a food and get instantly transported to the past and to a person?  Is it a stretch to think that those smells could pass into other worlds as well?  I loved the ghost story plot and it will make you think about the dangers of exploring the supernatural.  Set in the food scene of NYC, this book is a feast all the way around, and is an amazing debut.

5.23.2025 - The Ascent

The Ascent by Allison Buccola

Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House for gifting me a digital ARC of the new book by Allison Buccola.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!

Twenty years ago, the members of a cult outside Philadelphia disappeared without a trace - except for one 12-year-old girl found wandering alone looking for her family.  Since then, Lee has been trying to move forward with a new identity, a new husband who doesn't know her full story, and a baby girl.  But her past comes out in other ways, because Lee is terrified of letting baby Lucy out of her sight, and it's ruining her marriage.  Then a stranger shows up on her doorstep who may have the answers Lee is looking for.

I could not put this book down and thought it was fabulous.  Told in dual timelines, both tense and filled with secrets that had me flipping the pages as fast as I could.  I liked that there wasn't too much attention paid to the cult itself, but focused more on the trauma afterwards that is carried forward.  It also delves deeply into motherhood and identify, and the challenges of those even without extra baggage.  I did love the storyline of Anna, Lee's aunt, who took her into her family.  This was the perfect blend of suspense and character drama, and I highly recommend it!

5.22.2025 - Our Last Wild Days

Our Last Wild Days by Anna Bailey

Many thanks to NetGalley, Simon & Schuster | Atria Books for gifting me the sophomore novel by Anna Bailey, after her wonderful debut, Where the Truth Lies.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!

Loyal May has tried to put her childhood growing up in the swamps of Louisiana squarely in the past.  But when her mom needs help, she grudgingly returns, hoping to also make peace after a fall out with her friend, Cutter.  But when Cutter is found dead and presumed a suicide, Loyal is a journalist and is determined to find answers, even though it's too late to make restitutions with Cutter.

Wow - this is an incredibly atmospheric novel, set in the backwoods swamps of Louisiana, where huge alligators are everywhere and hunting them is a way of life.  And so are drugs and violence.  Cutter's family have had it tough and continue to be outcasts in Jacknife, but there are evil forces in all aspects of life here.  These characters felt so real and raw, and I loved Loyal and Sasha, her coworker on the small town newspaper.  I also felt for Loyal and her mom, as they both tried to navigate disease and a new relationship.  There's a Gothic vibe throughout and I couldn't get enough of this book, and the fight for redemption.  Anna Bailey has cemented her place as a must-read author for me!

5.21.2025 - The Girls of Good Fortune

The Girls of Good Fortune by Kristina McMorris

Many thanks to NetGalley, Sourcebooks Landmark and RB Media for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of this historical fiction novel by Kristina McMorris, with the audiobook wonderfully narrated by Cindy Kay.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

It's Portland, 1888, when a woman awakens in an underground cell, drugged and disguised.  Celia soon realizes she's a "shanghaied" victim on the verge of being shipped off as forced labor.  In an era fraught with anti-Chinese sentiment, being half-Chinese she is used to adapting for survival.  She must find a way to escape.

This was a historical time period in Portland that I have never heard about.  As always with McMorris's books, it is meticulously researched and you can definitely feel like you are in another world.  As Celia awakes, she goes back in time to 1885, remembering how she got where she is, determined to fight for her life.  I had to pay close attention to the year so as not to be confused, but once it was all set in the same time period, it flowed easier for me.  It's a beautiful reminder of how important stories are to be passed through the generations, as well as a story of hope and human resilience in the face of evil.  The narration was wonderful and added to the atmospheric feel of this book.

5.21.2025 - Marguerite by the Lake

Marguerite by the Lake by Mary Dixie Carter

Many thanks to NetGalley, St Martin's Press, Minotaur Books and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest novel by Mary Dixie Carter, with the audiobook beautifully narrated by Helen Laser.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Marguerite Gray is a lifestyle icon known for her gardens as well being the muse behind the famous Serge Kuhnert painting, Marguerite by the Lake. She lives with her husband, Geoffrey, on the famed Rosecliff grounds.  Phoenix is the gardener on the estate and works hard to craft the landscape that is so important to Marguerite’s brand.  The night of the launch party for Marguerite’s latest book, Phoenix spots a falling tree and saves Geoffrey, and an affair soon begins.  Then Marguerite falls to her death from the same point where she posed for the famous painting.

Helen Laser did a great job narrating this intriguing story of obsession, jealousy, mental illness, with a touch of the supernatural.  After Phoenix gets the life she thinks she wants and deserves, it’s still not enough for her – a good reminder to be careful what you wish for.  There were a lot of relationship drama here and you could cut the tension with a knife.  I liked the gardening aspect to the story and that ending was perfect, though it did leave some threads to the reader’s imagination.

5.20.2025 - The Surf House

The Surf House by Lucy Clarke

Many thanks to NetGalley and Grove Atlantic | Atlantic Monthly Press for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest thriller by Lucy Clarke.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Bea is looking for an escape from her life as a model but ends up in a scary situation in Marrakech.  She gets rescued by Marnie, who takes her to a small town where surfing rules and lets her stay at The Surf House.  Bea learns that another young woman disappeared from the area and gets involved in trying to locate her.  But everyone has secrets and life is not as idyllic as it seems.

This was such an atmospheric thriller with an intriguing cast of characters.  There was such a laidback coastal vibe and I admired all the relationships that developed.  It's so descriptive - I got hungry for all the wonderful sounding food!  But don't get too relaxed at the beach, because this book is also a fast-paced, tense, and gripping mystery.   I questioned so many of the characters and was shocked to find I was not even close to figuring things out.  A perfect summer thriller!

5.20.2025 - The Love Haters

The Love Haters by Katherine Center

Many thanks to NetGalley, St Martin's Press, and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest rom-com by a favorite, Katherine Center, with the audiobook narrated by the wonderful Patti Murin.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Katie has had bad luck in the romance department and now she feels like her career is in trouble as well.  She either waits to get laid off as a video producer or take the task of profiling Hutch, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer in Key West.  But, Katie can't swim, which is a necessity.  She figures she can fake it long enough.  But she may get called out on a few things along the way.

I am not always a huge romance-genre fan, but Katherine Center is always a must read for me.  While I may not have loved this one as much as her previous books, I still enjoyed the escape to sunny Key West.  Plus I learned some interesting things about our brave Coast Guard personnel!  There are some great side characters (mostly Rue, Hutch's aunt, as well as George Bailey, a Great Dane)., and I felt the story was charming and engaging.  I'm always a fan of Patti Murin's narration and I ended up mostly listening to this one.  Great book to stash in your beach bag for sure!

5.20.2025 - We Live Here Now

We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough

Many thanks to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and Flatiron Books | Pine & Cedar for gifting me an audio ARC of this creepy tale by Sarah Pinborough, made even better with the narration of Helen Baxendale, Jamie Glover, and the author.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!

After an accident nearly kills her, Emily and her husband, Freddie, move from London to a beautiful Dartmoor country house called Larkin Lodge. The house is gorgeous, striking—and to Emily, something about it feels deeply wrong.  Fires go out, books fall from shelves, and she feels a presence in the third-floor room.  Freddie doesn’t notice anything and insists that Emily is still recovering from postsepsis which can cause hallucinatory effects.  But bizarre events keep happening.

Oh my goodness, best read this one with the lights on!  There are creepy Gothic vibes happening, unreliable narrators, and suspense for miles that will keep you flipping the pages.  I loved the different POVs and how everyone had secrets they were keeping.  I could never have guessed that ending!  The star narration team just added to this and I would recommend listening to the audiobook.

5.19.2025 - The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away by Mike Gayle

Many thanks to NetGalley, and Brilliance Publishing Amazon Original Stories for gifting me an audio ARC of this short story by Mike Gayle, narrated by David Ijiti.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 3.5 stars!

Reuben thought he’d spend the rest of his life with Beth, until she broke his heart six months ago. He’s not even remotely over her, so he’s devastated to hear she’s getting married—this weekend.  What should he do on the day of her wedding?  His buddies have some plans, but things don't always go according to them!

I'm a Mike Gayle fan and was anxious to read this short story.  It goes back to Then so we understand their relationship, and Now.  There were some good life lessons here as well as having friends who will support you no matter what.  A cute story.

5.19.2025 - The Last Ferry Out

The Last Ferry Out by Andrea Bartz

Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House Ballantine Books for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest thriller by Andrea Bartz.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Abby felt drawn to go to Isla Colel because it was where her fiancée, Eszter, died to try and understand everything that happened.  The island is small with just a few locals and expats remaining, and the ferry only runs periodically.  Abby tries to befriend the expat group, but mysteries and secrets swarm around all of them.

I'm always a fan of locked-room style mysteries.  This was a slow burn atmospheric thriller, with a small group of characters all with backstories and suspicious behavior.  There are plenty of requisite twists and turns, and that ending was a big surprise.  It’s an exploration of love, loss, moving forward, and it kept me guessing and questioning everyone.

5.19.2025 - Heart of the Sun

Heart of the Sun by Mia Sheridan

Many thanks to NetGalley, Canary Street Press, and Harlequin Audio for gifting me an audio ARC of the latest novel by Mia Sheridan, perfectly narrated by André Santana and Annalee Scott.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Tuck and Emily grew up together, sharing a bond they thought they would always share.  Until life intervened.  Now over a decade later, Emily is a pop sensation, and her mom convinces her to let Tuck, an ex-con in need of a fresh start, be her bodyguard.  But then the world is thrust into darkness, and they must work together to survive.

I listened to this on audiobook and was drawn into the story of Tuck and Emily and was rooting for them throughout the book.  This is an intriguing mix of romance, survival, and dystopia, making for a compelling read.  It’s a good look into how humans behave when faced with disaster.

5.17.2025 - Their Double Lives

Their Double Lives by Jaime Lynn Hendricks

Many thanks to NetGalley, Penzler Publishers | Scarlet, and High Bridge Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest thriller by Jaime Lynn Henrdricks, with the audio perfectly narrated by Emma Love.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!

Kim is desperate to come up with money to get her dog life-saving surgery, so when an anonymous caller promises her money to kill someone, she decides to go ahead.  But on the night it’s supposed to happen, instead of the mark dying, it’s his fiancé who is dead at the table.  But Kim did nothing, so just exactly what is happening?

This was such a twisty thriller, told from the POV of both Kim and PJ from different timelines.  Best go into it with as little info as possible, so that you best enjoy it.  The characters felt real – their motivations, their feelings – even though some aren’t likeable in the least.  The plot was perfectly planned out and I suspected pretty much everyone and was so surprised at the end.  I mostly listened to the audiobook and loved the narration – I could feel the snark!  Be sure to add this one to your summer TBR!

5.16.2025 - Run for the Hills

Run for the Hills by Kevin Wilson

Many thanks to NetGalley, Harper Collins | Ecco for gifting me a digital ARC of the new book by Kevin Wilson.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Mad Hill and her mom have been working their farm in Tennessee for 20 years, since the day her day left them without a word.  But she's okay.  Then Rube shows up to the farm in a PT cruiser and tells Mad that she is his half-sister.  He also was left behind by their father.  But he hired a detective to track down his dad and discovered there are more half-siblings.  He convinces Mad to go on a road trip to meet them and find their dad.

As you would expect from Kevin Wilson, this book is full of fun, quirky characters with heart.  The storyline is intriguing - their dad seemingly became a new man each time he left his family.  Would the siblings ever find out why he left each of them?  Would their lives have been different if he would have stayed or at least stayed in touch?  What will happen when they find him?  Lots of interesting themes but it's also just a fun, zany road trip - and who doesn't need one of those this summer?

5.16.2025 - Maine Characters

Maine Characters by Hannah Orenstein

Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for gifting me a digital ARC of the new book by Hannah Orenstein.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Vivian and Lucy are half-sisters who have never met.  They each spent a month every summer with their father in Maine at his lake house, but separate months, and they had very different lives the rest of the year.  When Vivian arrives at the cabin to spread her father's ashes and sell the cabin, she's shocked to find Lucy there, waiting for him and not knowing he died.  They are each going through personal crises, and they have to figure out their future.

Told from both Vivian and Lucy's POV, this story pulled me in to explore the complexities of sisters and families, of secrets kept, of grief and longing.  I enjoyed the small town Maine setting, and could picture the sunrises.  It's a book filled with heart, a little romance, but mostly of family and how it's never too late to start anew.

5.15.2025 - The Best We Could Hope For

The Best We Could Hope For by Nicola Kraus

Many thanks to NetGalley, Little A and Brilliance Publishing for gifting me an audio ARC of the new novel by Nicola Kraus.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Bunny and Jayne are sisters, but couldn't be any different.  But their lives will be combined forever when Bunny leaves her children with Jayne.  And again when she returns.

This is a sad but moving family saga set over the time period of the 1940s to 2013.  We follow two sisters, Bunny and Jayne, as well as their children through this time.  There are family secrets and trauma that will follow them and affect their lives for years.  I loved the nostalgia throughout the years, and felt Kraus' handling of the trauma was sensitive and well done, with no extraneous details just for the sake of drama.  The point was made perfectly.  Helen Laser's narration is always perfect and kept me listening.

5.15.2025 - One in Four

One in Four by Lucinda Berry

Many thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing | Thomas & Mercer for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest thriller by Lucinda Berry.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Laurel is a sober coach, working on a reality tv show about child stars trying to get sober.  The 30 day program of 24/7 live feeds is almost over when there is a  mysterious death one of the show participants.  Laurel soon finds herself being questioned by police and not being able to understand some of the evidence against her.

Just like reality tv for many, this book was impossible to look away from.  I was pulled into the story of Laurel, trying so hard to help these young people become sober.  She had issues in her past so she can relate to their struggles.  In alternating chapters, we also get the story of a mysterious "her" detailing a sexual assault.  Just how is that related?  Hold on, reader, because it's going to get wild!  I was stunned at the ending, and that last scene!

5.14.2025 - Be Mine

Be Mine by Lizzy Barber

Many thanks to NetGalley and Datura Books for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest book by Lizzy Barber.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Beth was running from her past when she got involved with a wellness group, Elixir.  That too became a nightmare.  Then years later, her life looks very different - she's married with a young child.  But she's still struggling to fit into her new role.  When she receives a mysterious letter bearing the infinity symbol, she knows instantly that Elixir is back in her life.

You won't be able to read this without thinking of another cult, NXIVM, that was in all the headlines.  This story was told out in dual timelines - Beth before when she was getting involved with Elixir, and in present day where she's fearful of them coming back in her life.  There were lots of twists and turns in this one that I could never have guessed.  I am fascinated with cults and how leaders are able to brainwash people so thoroughly, so this was both a look into that as well as just a great read!

5.14.2025 - The Mind is Burning

The Mind Is Burning by Jonathan Hirsch

Many thanks to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing for gifting me an audio ARC of this memoir by Jonathan Hirsch, narrated by the author.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Jonathan's upbringing wasn't normal; his parents were constantly chasing spiritual enlightenment and eventually got involved with Franklin, a cult leader.  Jonathan left home the day he turned 18, but 20 years later was pulled back into his family when Thomas was diagnosed with dementia.

Jonathan Hirsch is a podcaster by trade, so this book is well done and included interview snippets with his father.  While his family was involved in a cult and Jonathan had to deal with that growing up and it obviously shaped him and his relationship with his father, this book mostly centers around that relationship as they are both adults.  Dealing with a parent with dementia now, I certainly related with the difficulties surrounding being responsible for a parent while still trying to have your own life.  Add into that a bad relationship such as Hirsh had with his father, I cannot imagine how hard it was.  We will all be faced with the question of just what exactly we owe our parents as they age, so this is a good reflection on that topic.

5.14.2025 - The Bookstore Family

The Bookstore Family by Alice Hoffman

Many thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Original Stories for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest novella in the wonderful Once Upon a Time Bookshop Series by Alice Hoffman.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

Violet took the chance of a lifetime to pursue her dream of attending culinary school in Paris, which required leaving her family bookstore on Brinkley's Island, Maine.  While she achieved her dream, all she can think about his home.  What is she missing?

I will read anything Alice Hoffman writes, and I have thoroughly enjoyed this series of short stories,  Every time I open one, I am instantly transported to the little island bookstore and its surrounding family.   The characters feel so real, and I love the connection between love, loss, and food.  While this could be the last in the series, I'm hopeful for more.  What I'd love to see is a cookbook with recipes of all these amazing-sounding foods!

5.13.2025 - Slaying You

Slaying You by Michelle Gagnon

Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam Books for gifting me a digital ARC of the sequel to the wonderful book, Killing Me, by Michelle Gagnon.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Amber and Grace went their separate ways after dealing with a serial killer.   Now they are both in Vegas for a friend's wedding, hoping for a relaxing, normal time.   But neither do normal well and they've attracted yet another serial killer's attention.  Can they escape again?

I would definitely recommend reading Killing Me first because it is so fun, and this is a worthy sequel.  I got right back into the story and characters, and enjoyed the dark humor, suspense, and this eclectic friendship group.  This is definitely about found family, especially as Amber's parents make an appearance.  Just a fun book and I'm hoping for more!

5.13.2025 - I Hope You Remember

I Hope You Remember by Josie Balka

Many thanks to NetGalley, Simon and Schuster | Simon Element for gifting me a digital and physical ARC of this wonderful book of poetry by Josie Balka.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

While I had never heard of this author before, even though she's apparently wildly popular on Tik Tok and radio, I was absolutely blown away by how these poems about life made me feel.  Divided into chapters of Loving, Longing, and Living, each one will bring up a different emotion.  It's nostalgic, hopeful, full of self-love and understanding, and this is going to be my go-to gift especially for younger women making their way in the world.  But trust me, no matter what your age or walk in life, these poems will touch your heart.  Highly recommended!

5.13.2025 - Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by Jessica Guerrieri

Many thanks to NetGalley, Goodreads, HarperCollins Focus | Harper Muse for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of this wonderful debut novel by Jessica Guerrieri, with the audiobook beautifully narrated by Mia Hutchinson-Shaw.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!

Leah's life didn't turn out quite as she planned.  Her artistic ambitions have been pushed to the side while she tries to be a good wife and mother.  But she can never be as good as her mother-in-law, who always seems to be judging her.   Plus, she's keeping a secret that could threaten everything.  So she turns to alcohol.

A very personal look at addiction, motherhood, and family and I really liked this story.  Leah’s struggles seemed so relatable, and her secrets weighed heavily on her.  Add to the mix that her husband was opening a new restaurant and gone so much, her work and time were an afterthought, and a mother-in-law that Leah felt was always judging her and was too involved in their lives.  Who wouldn’t want another glass of wine?  I thought the portrayal of her alcoholism was done so well – be sure to read the author’s note for the reason.  It's also an exploration of the women in our life we need to support us, and how we have to let them in.  This is a beautifully-written debut, with characters I cared about, and a story I didn’t want to put down.

5.12.2025 - The Man Made of Smoke

The Man Made of Smoke by Alex North

Many thanks to NetGalley, Celadon Books, and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest thriller by Alex North, with the audiobook perfectly narrated by Shane Zaza.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own – 4.5 stars!

Dan Garvie’s life has been haunted by the crime he witnessed as a child and the fact that he narrowly escaped an encounter with a notorious serial killer. He has dedicated his life since to becoming a criminal profiler, eager to seek justice for innocent victims. When his father passes away under suspicious circumstances, Dan revisits his small island community, determined to uncover the truth about his death.  Is it possible that the monster he remembers from his childhood nightmares has returned after all these years?

Alex North has done it again – created a creepy, scary story to immerse yourself in.  This one has such a unique perspective too; it’s told in the voices of both a father and son, each dealing with trauma and guilt over their actions/non-actions decades before and how things could have been different.  This goes beyond just a spine-tingling thriller and becomes emotional and thought-provoking as well.  But don’t worry – it’s scary because it feels so real and we all know that there are monsters lurking!

5.11.2025 - Three Mothers

Three Mothers by Hannah Beckerman

Many thanks to NetGalley, Brilliance Audio, and Lake Union Publishing for gifting me an audio ARC of this thought-provoking story by Hannah Beckerman, wonderfully narrated by Kristin Atherton.  The perfect book to review on Mother's Day!  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Three mothers who will do anything for their children - Abby, whose daughter Isla is killed in a hit-and-run accident; Nicole, Abby's best friend and mother of two boys; and Jenna, determined to see that her son has a new chance on life.  A tragedy unites them and may tear them all apart.

This was a wonderful look at motherhood and just how far one might go to protect their children.  It's also a look at the mother/child relationship and the struggle for children to come into their own, keeping secrets from their parents, being put in situations they are ill-equipped to handle.  The story is told in short chapters from the different perspectives of each mother as well as different timelines, and I was glued to it.  Tons of themes in this one - from friendship, to abuse, to classism, and grief.  The narration was wonderful and helped further engage me into the story.  Would be a good book club pick.

5.10.2025 - Lessons From My Teachers

Lessons from My Teachers by Sarah Ruhl

Many thanks to NetGalley, Simon and Schuster, Simon Element, Marysue Rucci Books for gifting me the new nonfiction book by Sarah Ruhl, playwright and author of Smile.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Based on her popular class at Yale, this essay collection is a testament to the singular impact of teachers across every stage of our lives. Anchored in stories both personal and universal, drawing on Sarah’s experiences with her parents and children, with schoolteachers, creative influences, and beyond, Lessons from My Teachers offers an uplifting perspective on our basic human need to teach and learn from each other as we navigate the surprising paths that shape our lives.

Teaching can be a very thankless profession, especially today.  This book offers short essays that will make you think and reflect upon all of those in your life who have made an impact.  Maybe it will even cause you to write a note to that special person and let them know how they helped shape you or your children at a particular time.  It also shows us that teachers take all forms in our lives, because we all have things to learn and things to teach others.  We all need reminders to be grateful to those who help us along the way.

5.9.2025 - When Stars Align

When Stars Align by Melissa de la Cruz

Many thanks to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing, Mindy's Book Studio and MB Communications, and Brilliance Audio for gifting me an audio ARC of the latest Mindy's Book Studio offering by Melissa de la Cruz, narrated perfectly by Dominique Salvacion, Caroline Hewitt, and Soneela Nankani.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Best friends Miranda Montana, Germaine St. Germaine-Chang, and Sicily Bell were the darlings of Hollywood who rose from teen success to in-demand idols of screaming fans and paparazzi.  But nothing lasts forever.  Now Miranda, the wild-child movie star, drifts from rehab to dead-end relationships as she tries for a comeback from a very public fall from grace. Germaine, the daughter of billionaire hotel moguls, has lost her purpose. And then there’s Sicily, the all-American pop star who had a record deal, sold-out concerts, and controlling parents who squeezed the very life out of her. After a decade, fate reconnects these three young women for a long-awaited confrontation with the secrets, betrayals, heartbreak, and family traumas of the past.

This was really entertaining, and the narration really pulled you into the story.  It's nostalgic, taking you back to a time when Britney, Lindsay, and Paris were all anyone could talk about.  The story delves into the public obsession with celebrities - both when they are at the top, and maybe more so when they aren't.  It makes you feel bad for these young people thrust into a world that they could never prepare for, plus so many don't have the support required.  Eye opening, but also just an entertaining story!

5.9.2025 - The River is Waiting

The River Is Waiting by Wally Lamb

Many thanks to NetGalley, Simon & Schuster | Simon Element | Marysue Rucci Books for gifting me a physical and digital ARC of this fabulous book by a long time favorite author, Wally Lamb.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

It only takes a moment for a life to change, making it easy to forget those moments before.  Corby is struggling with losing his job, being the full-time carer of his twin toddlers, and a growing secret addiction to alcohol and pills.  When tragedy strikes and Corby is sentenced to prison, he's not sure how or if he will survive.

This book is everything - powerful, raw, devastating, and will make you think and feel strongly about addiction, the choices we make, how to forgive each other and ourselves, and the hope of redemption.  Mr. Lamb writes so powerfully about the prison experience because of his experience teaching at a women's correctional institution, and the conditions depicted here will leave you in tears and anger, but also grateful for the bright souls in those environments.  I felt so strongly for the characters - Corby and Emily, but the minor characters as well, This isn't an easy read, but it's beautifully written, tense, and gripping and you won't be able to look away.  Definitely a must read and will deservedly be at the top of everyone's list of 2025 favorites.

5.8.2025 - No One Was Supposed to Die at This Wedding

No One Was Supposed to Die at This Wedding by Catherine Mack

Many thanks to NetGalley, St Martin’s Press | Minotaur Books, Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of this fun book by Catherine Mack (alias of mystery writer Catherine McKenzie), with the audiobook wonderfully narrated by Elizabeth Evans.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own – 4.5 stars!

Eleanor Dash is back!  A film is being made of her last adventure, and her best friend, Emma, is both starring in the movie and getting married.  But then Emma gets a note saying that someone is going to die at the wedding.  Eleanor will do whatever she can to make sure that doesn’t happen.

I loved the first book in this Vacation Mystery series, and this second installment is a worthy sequel.  I love how the main character, Eleanor Dash, “talks” to the reader, even giving clues, but again, if you’re able to figure out this mystery, bravo to you because I wasn’t even close.  It’s a locked room mystery on an island with a storm (because of course!), with a film being made and a wedding set to happen.  There’s lots of drama, lots of questionable people and motives, and once again, footnotes (so fun).  I alternated listening to the audiobook and reading it; it was fun either way but the narration was great!

5.7.2025 - I Will Blossom Anyway

I Will Blossom Anyway by Disha Bose

Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House Ballantine Books for gifting me a digital ARC of the sophomore novel by Disha Bose.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Durga left her life and family in India for a tech job in Ireland.  She finally feels free of all the societal and cultural expectations of her family, and is enjoying her new life.  That means a romance with Jacob, which comes with the added bonus of Joy, his sister and her best friend and flatmate.  But she can't fully commit and introduce Jacob to her family at her sister's upcoming wedding, because he's biracial and she feels they won't accept him.  Can she balance her two worlds?

I was a big fan of Bose's debut, Dirty Laundry, and enjoyed delving into this one as well.  It's so interesting to read about the Indian cultures of matchmaking in today's world, and the expectations put on women especially to be married.  But it's also a cautionary tale of not trusting those who love us to want the best of us, and instead guess at their reactions.   A good look at grief, and growing into our best selves.

5.6.2025 - My Friends

My Friends by Fredrik Backman

Many thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster | Atria Books for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest novel by the one and only, Fredrik Backman.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

Twenty-five years ago, a group of teenagers find refuge from their tough home lives and spend long summer days on an abandoned pier.  They find their humans.  Out of that summer, a painting emerges in the present time that will find its way to Louisa, also a teenager escaping from her life.  A journey to discover the story behind the painting ensues.

Fredrik Backman has done it again - I'm not sure if I could pick a favorite, but this could be it.  There are a lot of tough subjects to deal with here, but I found myself laughing out loud on the same page that caused my eyes to tear up.  Told in dual timelines seamlessly, as one of the friends tells Louisa the story of the painting and the friendship group.  I felt like I was sitting next to them on the train, engrossed in a story.  It's a love story to both art and friends, and their power to heal and transform us.  It's perfection and a must read once again from Backman.

5.6.2025 - The Names

The Names by Florence Knapp

Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House | Viking | Pamela Dorman Books for gifting me a digital ARC of this amazing debut novel by Florence Knapp, and a Read with Jenna May 2025 pick.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own – 5 sparkling stars!

Can a name change the course of a life?  Cora sets off with her 9-year-old daughter, Maia, to register her son’s birth.  Her husband, Gordon, insists that the family tradition be continued by naming him Gordon.  But when she gets to the registrar, she hesitates.  Thus follows three alternate and alternating versions of their lives, shaped by her choice of a name.

Oh, my goodness, did this book touch me on so many levels.  The way the stories unfold, told through the three versions of Cora’s son, moving forward every 7 years, is so unique.  We also see how each different version of him affects all those around him.  There are some characters that are in each version, such as Maia, his sister, and Lily, but they are also different shades.  The domestic abuse storyline is also a character, showing how everyone is affected, not only in the moment, but forever.  However, it’s still a very hopeful novel, one that shows the power and resilience of people, and the way love can change us.  This is a must-read book and the fact that it’s a debut leaves me in awe.  I literally was so engrossed in it that the rest of the world faded away.  Characters and situations felt so real that it was immensely powerful.  The illustrations are beautiful as well.  I can’t wait to read more from this author, but this book is just spectacular no matter what may come down the road.

5.5.2025 - Parent's Weekend

Parents Weekend by Alex Finlay

Many thanks to NetGalley, St Martin's Press | Minotaur Books and Macmillan Audio for gifting me both a digital and audio ARC of the latest thriller by Alex Finlay, with the audiobook perfectly narrated by Brittany Pressley.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own – 4 stars!

It's Parents’ Weekend at a small college in northern California.  All the parents are gathered at dinner but none of their children show up.  As time clicks by, panic sets in.  The students are from very different backgrounds and all of the families have secrets.

I always look forward to Alex Finlay’s latest book.  This one even has a returning character in FBI Agent Sarah Keller, although it’s definitely a stand-alone read.   I loved having both the digital and audio files of this book to seamlessly go back and forth and any audiobook narrated by Brittany Pressley is perfection.  The story unfolds through multiple POVs and timelines.  I found it a bit confusing with so many characters, but easily fell into the story and mystery.

5.4.2025 - Home of the American Circus

Home of the American Circus by Allison Larkin

Many thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster | Gallery Books for gifting me a digital ARC of this wonderful book by a favorite, Allison Larkin.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

Freya leaves her just-getting-by-life in Maine and returns to her hometown of Somers, NY, to live in the house that she inherited from her estranged parents.  She tries to lay low, but it's a small town, so she soon encounters all her old acquaintances, and most especially, her niece, Aubrey, who is secretly living in the falling-apart house.  As they work to fix the house and their relationship, they have to learn to live with what happened long ago.

Another fabulous character-driven novel by Larkin that will draw you in until you can't look away.  Freya is such a wonderful character - flawed but deeply set on being just the right person for the people in her life, especially Aubrey, giving her what neither received.  It's wonderfully atmospheric, and although it has covers some dark and painful topics, it feels hopeful and bright.  It's a beautiful story of second chances, stopping generational trauma, and loving people for who they are.  At over 400 pages, it never felt long or slow to me; instead I kept wanting to return to Freya and the family she created for herself.  Loved all the bits about Old Bet as well.  A must read!

5.2.2025 - I Want You to be Happy

I Want You to Be Happy by Pope Francis

Many thanks to NetGalley and FaithWords for gifting me a digital ARC of this inspirational book by Pope Francis.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 5 stars!

Pope Francis shares wisdom and encouragement to help readers seek true happiness - and reminds us what true happiness is and is not.  I savored this book, reading bits and pieces throughout Lent, and will refer to it often.  While I'm Catholic, that's not a necessity for appreciating this book.  Pope Francis points to scripture, but also uses quotes from sources such as The Lord of the Rings to stress various points,  RIP Pope Francis.

5.1.2025 - Hello, Juliet

Hello, Juliet by Samantha M. Bailey

Many thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer | Amazon Publishing for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest thriller by a favorite, Samantha M. Bailey.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars rounded up!

Ivy Westcott had her 15 minutes of fame as a casemate of the popular TV show, Hello, Juliet.  But that bubble popped quickly after a viral video caused her career to implode; only to have a documentary a decade later cement her fall.  But she's hopeful that a top-secret reunion episode can reunite her with her friends and give her and her mom financial security.  But the show has been haunted by secrets from the beginning.

This is a very binge-worthy book - I just wanted to sit and read until that explosive end that I sure didn't see coming.  Told in Ive's voice in dual timelines, we characters you just can't quite trust, yet each felt real and fleshed out.  You could feel Ivy's angst about just not fitting in or being good enough, but desperate to make it in Hollywood.  Bailey uses mixed media to show us just how quickly social media is ready to exploit all our flaws.  It's suspenseful and twisty.   Go into this one as blind as possible and enjoy the ride - it's a good one!

5.1.2025 - The Staircase in the Woods

The Staircase in the Woods by Chuck Wendig

Many thanks to NetGalley, Random House | Del Ray for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest thriller by Chuck Wendig.  All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!

Five high school friends are bonded by an oath to protect one another no matter what.  Then, on a camping trip in the middle of the forest, they find something a mysterious staircase to nowhere.  One friend walks up—and never comes back down. Then the staircase disappears.  Twenty years later, the staircase has reappeared. Now the group returns to find the lost boy—and what lies beyond the staircase in the woods.

This is a creepy, suspenseful story, weaving past and present timelines together so that we get a hint of how this group of friends finds themselves in a similar situation once again.  None of the characters are real likeable but that doesn’t mean you won’t be cheering for them; they are products of their pasts like we all are.  I loved some of the comparisons between a body and a house, what each absorbs, what each takes and gives.  A story that explores friendship and family, mixed in with a supernatural mystery.
