The story is spooled out in different voices and time periods. In 1995, Eva and Maggie are best friends but both keeping quiet even to each other about how they are being treated my people who supposedly love them. Eva's little sister, Nola, is a different, somewhat creepy child, obsessed with dead animals and even killing them to see inside. Then Eva is found murdered in a cave and nothing is ever the same. In 2020, Maggie still lives in town and is married, 7 months pregnant, and a police detective. New evidence is found in Eva's case and Maggie is assigned to investigate. Nola is still in town as well, working as a veterinarian, still up to her creepiness. How many of these secrets will come to light during the investigation?
Just a book I could not put down, complete with a twist that will have your head spinning. Highly recommended!
