Many thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for gifting me a digital ARC of this wonderful historical fiction book by Hazel Gaynor - 5 stars!
Two women, strangers to each other, become entwined forever. In 1940, Alice, a teacher, is determined to do her part in the war effort. She decides to help evacuate British children overseas to keep them safe. Lily is one of those mothers who had to make the heart wrenching decision to send her children away. Then a German U-boat torpedos the rescue ship on its way with the children to Canada, Only one lifeboat of people survive, but will they make it to safety?
Inspired by a true story, and told in alternating chapters between the POV of Alice and Lily, this is a wonderfully-written, gripping tale of sacrifice, loss, hope. I was so engrossed in each storyline - feeling bereft along with both women, one just trying to stay alive and keep others going; one mother grieving her decision and her children. Highly recommended!
